In a recent episode of The Ownership Advantage, I sat down with Justin Dixon—founder and CEO of Hire Tomorrow—to unpack what it really looks like to leave the security of corporate life and step fully into entrepreneurship.
What stood out wasn’t hype or heroics. It was the steady, intentional way Justin and his wife prepared, aligned, and built a foundation that could carry them through the uncertainty of business ownership. Their story is a playbook for anyone looking to make the jump without blowing up their life in the process.
Justin’s path wasn’t about a reckless leap—it was about calculated preparation. He and his wife knew they were both risk-averse, so instead of rushing, they spent nearly two years designing their exit.
Here’s what that looked like in practice:
Renting out their Philadelphia condo and moving into a smaller apartment.
Cutting down to one car.
Trimming expenses until one salary could cover the essentials.
This wasn’t about deprivation—it was about clarity. As Justin put it: “We weren’t overly restrictive. We just asked: what’s waste? What can we constrain?”
That intentional downsizing created the soft landing that made entrepreneurship possible.
Justin’s journey highlights something most business owners overlook: your success doesn’t just hinge on your business plan—it hinges on your partner being all-in.
Through the uncertainty of 2020, when the hiring world froze overnight, Justin’s wife never wavered. She didn’t place blame. She didn’t panic. She kept her career strong while standing firm on their shared vision for the future.
That kind of alignment isn’t optional—it’s the foundation that carries you when plans get derailed.
One of Justin’s biggest insights came from building Hire Tomorrow. Too many small business owners fall into what he calls the “post and pray” trap: throw a job listing online, cross your fingers, and hope someone good shows up.
But small businesses rarely have the luxury of hiring generalists who can do everything. Misaligned roles lead to turnover, frustration, and wasted money.
Instead, Justin works with clients early in the process to:
Define the role clearly and realistically.
Avoid scope creep.
Build a hiring plan that matches actual business needs.
He flips the traditional risk conversation on its head, too. Is it really less risky to rely on one employer for your income—or to diversify across dozens of clients?
Of course, no conversation today is complete without AI. Justin is clear-eyed about it: most tools are just shiny wrappers over existing tech. The real advantage comes from focused, intentional adoption.
For him, AI is a thought partner—something that can get you 70–80% of the way there. But he warns against letting automation take over where human nuance, liability, or empathy matter—like executive hiring or interviews.
AI can save time. But ownership requires discernment.
Justin is blunt on this point: holding onto tasks out of ego isn’t just bad for you—it’s robbing someone else of the chance to do it better.
He credits a world-class virtual assistant as one of his best hires, and he challenges other entrepreneurs to stop clutching at tasks that aren’t theirs anymore.
True ownership isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing less—while building systems and empowering others to do the work with excellence.
Justin Dixon’s story isn’t about luck or timing. It’s about intentional preparation, aligned partnership, and the courage to let go of what no longer serves you.
For business owners caught in the messy middle—torn between security and growth—the lesson is simple: clarity, systems, and smart delegation create the space for real freedom.
"I am so grateful for Tanner and his ability to share his gifting as a coach. I taught a class at a local university and invited Tanner as a guest speaker. His ability to connect the content with the students was incredible. Upon completing the semester, many of the students referenced his visit and the things he taught as key take aways in the final survey. Great work!"
